What is a gastroenterologist?
Gastroenterologists, commonly referred to as GEs, are doctors who specialize in digestive health. They start with a three-year residency in Internal Medicine, and only after completing that do they begin specialized training in gastroenterology. This is where a gastroenterologist focuses his or her study on overall GI health, including the treatment of diseases in the gastrointestinal tract and liver, such as colon polyps, heartburn, colitis, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
According to the American College of Gastroenterology, GEs are distinguished from other physicians to provide more complete, accurate, and thorough care for patients regarding their gastrointestinal health conditions.
