Tips for the Week:

  • Make waves. When was the last time you went for a swim? Swimming offers a good cardiovascular workout without putting stress on your joints.
  • Relax with lavender. The scent of lavender can help reduce stress, anxiety, and insomnia. Light a lavender-scented candle at home after a busy day at work.
  • Stuff a whole-wheat pita. Make your typical turkey sandwich healthier. Just replace sandwich bread with a whole-wheat pita.
  • Flavor your water. Is drinking water becoming less appealing? Before you reach for a soda, try adding some flavor to your water. Add a splash of lemon or lime juice, or add a few berries to your glass.

Recipe: Fast-Baked Apples with Oatmeal Streusel

It's time to celebrate. Invite a few friends and make this tasty dessert. Cooking apples in the microwave, rather than the regular oven, yields plumper, juicier, less shriveled fruit—and saves a big chunk of time!

Makes 4 servings

Ingredients
4 large Rome or Cortland apples (10 ounces each)
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup quick-cooking oats, uncooked
2 tablespoons chopped dates
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons margarine or butter

Directions
  1. Core apples, cutting out a 1-1/4-inch-diameter cylinder from the center of each, almost but not all the way through to the bottom. Remove the peel about one-third of the way down from the top. Place apples in shallow 1-1/2-quart ceramic casserole or 8" by 8" glass baking dish.

  2. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar, oats, dates, and cinnamon. Fill each cored apple with equal amounts of oat mixture. (Mixture will spill over top of apples.) Place 1/2 teaspoon margarine on top of filling in each apple.

  3. Microwave apples, covered, on medium-high until tender, 12 to 14 minutes, turning each apple halfway through cooking time. Spoon cooking liquid from baking dish over apples to serve.

Activity Idea: Leg Circle

This Pilates move will help you develop a strong core. Your “core” is the center of your body, consisting of your abdominal and back muscles. Please seek your physician’s advice before beginning a new exercise routine.

  1. Lie on your back with your legs out and your arms placed near your sides.

  2. Extend your right leg toward the ceiling, keeping your toes pointed. Your left leg should be resting on the floor.

  3. Keeping your right leg as straight as possible, trace a large circle in the air. Inhale during the beginning of the circle, and exhale toward the end.

  4. Do eight circles, reverse the direction, and do eight more.

  5. Repeat with your left leg.
