Tips for the Week:

  • Add soluble fiber to your diet. Soluble fiber absorbs excess liquid in the colon to help promote regularity. Good sources of soluble fiber include oats, beans, peas, and many types of fruit. Adding fiber to the foods you cook is another way to add fiber to your diet. Metamucil® is a fiber supplement that you can stir, mix, cook, and bake into foods and drinks. Just 1 heaping teaspoon of Metamucil adds 5 grams of fiber!
  • Worried about your calcium intake? Many people avoid dairy products and, therefore, don't get the recommended daily amount of calcium. Nondairy sources of calcium include calcium-fortified juices, cereals, breads, soy beverages or rice beverages, canned fish (sardines, salmon with bones), soybeans and other soy products, some other dried beans, and some leafy greens (collard and turnip greens, kale, and bok choy).
  • How many steps are you taking daily? You've probably heard about the new recommendation to take 10,000 steps a day. Wearing a pedometer is an easy way to find out how close you are to this healthy level. Here are a few easy ways to add steps to your day:
    • Don't do it alone! Take a walk with your spouse or child, walk the dog, or walk to visit your neighbors.
    • Walk more while doing things at home. Use a push mower, go up and down the stairs more often, or just hide the remote and get up to change channels.
    • Window-shop or stroll the mall—better yet, walk to the store!
