Tips for the Week:

  • These tips can help you prepare before you talk to your doctor so you can get the most out of your visits.
    • Be on time.
    • Be scientific. Write down questions ahead of time and take notes. Keeping a diary of stool patterns, diet, and activities can be very helpful for finding ways to manage the problem.
    • Be inquisitive. Outline concerns and be specific—and don’t be afraid to ask questions about your specific areas of concern and interest.
    • Be organized. Bring a copy of your medical history information (include allergies, illnesses, and surgeries) and a current list of prescription and nonprescription (over-the-counter) medications and supplements currently being taken.
    • Be interactive. Successful management of many problems requires a partnership with your physician. Before your appointment, establish goals you want to accomplish during your visit, such as discussing new concerns, finding a better solution, or talking about getting beyond your upsets.
  • Avoid overeating while eating out. Digestive upsets often are triggered by eating large meals, such as those frequently served in restaurants. When eating out, try these easy ways to avoid overeating and the problems it causes:
    • Order an appetizer or side dish instead of an entrée.
    • Ask for salad dressing to be served on the side so you can add only as much as you want.
    • Share a main dish with a friend, or when your food is delivered, ask for a take-home container and set half of your food aside immediately.
    • Resign from the "clean your plate club"—when you’ve eaten enough, leave the rest.
    • Choose fruits instead of a heavy dessert.
  • Try this relaxation technique and calm your mind with deep-breathing meditation. One basic and easy meditation technique is to relax by focusing on breathing. Find a quiet place and focus your attention on the actions of breathing in and out. If you feel your attention start to wander, gently return your focus back to the rhythms of your breathing.

Recipe: Smoked Salmon Tortilla Spirals

It’s time to celebrate. Invite a few friends and make this tasty, yet healthy, appetizer.

Makes 72 appetizers

Ingredients
1-1/2 packages (8 ounces each) cream cheese, softened
4 ounces thinly sliced smoked salmon, chopped
3 tablespoons capers, drained and chopped
1/4 cup loosely packed fresh dill, chopped
4 (10-inch) flour tortillas

Directions
  1. In a medium bowl, mix all ingredients except tortillas until blended.

  2. Spread filling evenly over tortillas. Roll up each tortilla tightly, jelly-roll fashion. Wrap each roll in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm enough to slice—at least four hours or overnight.

  3. To serve, unwrap tortilla rolls and trim ends. Cut rolls into 1/2-inch-thick slices.
